Al-Qosh Monastery (Rabban Hormizd Monastery)

What Is It?

Built into the mountainside above the town of Al-Qosh, this 7th-century monastery was once the heart of the Chaldean Catholic Church. Known as the Monastery of Rabban Hormizd, it has long been a pilgrimage site for Iraqi Christians.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Climb up to the monastery carved into the cliffs and enjoy its dramatic setting.

  • See ancient caves and inscriptions used by monks for centuries.

  • Visit the nearby town of Al-Qosh, home to one of Iraq’s oldest Christian communities.

A Monument That Speaks to the Heart

Al-Qosh Monastery tells the story of faith lived in simplicity and devotion. Even though much of it is now a ruin, the site is deeply spiritual and inspiring.
